Lighting Makes a Difference

Good lighting can make a huge difference in how you feel about your home. It helps you perform tasks, promotes safety and comfort allowing you to enjoy your home to its full potential. Lighting adds beauty and drama to any room. It can make a small room look open and airy, and large rooms appear cozy and inviting. It can create a stimulating atmosphere for a night of entertaining, or a quiet feeling of relaxation after a long and tiring day. In so many ways, lighting can make a difference. And, it does so quite inexpensively compared to other home decorating or remodeling options.

Lighting Design & Layout

A good lighting design is vitally important for functionality, security as well as aesthetics greatly adding to the enjoyment and the value of your home. Good lighting does not have to be expensive... just correctly planned. General, task and accent lighting are the three basic types of lighting that work together to light your home. With correct planning, we can enjoy the benefits of what good lighting can do instead having to contend with the ineffectiveness of poor lighting. Poor lighting is usually a result of a lack of preparation or inexpert advice. With our changing lifestyles, the rooms in our homes are more spacious and multi-functional, therefore lighting design should consider these facts. Take the kitchen for example. Today’s kitchens are more than just places to prepare meals. In addition to its primary food function, this room ranks as the heart of the home and center of family activity. Such multi-tasking kitchens demand equally versatile lighting. Gone are the days when a single fixture centered in the kitchen ceiling was considered adequate.

Professional Lighting Design Service

Lighting should be planned to complement your lifestyle. So, first you need to develop a home lighting plan that suits your individual needs and those of your family. When planning your lighting, look at the activities that occur in each room, the atmosphere you want to create and the decorative elements you wish to emphasize. Keep in mind that light can be absorbed and even wasted in dark-colored rooms, or reflected and used as additional illumination in light-colored rooms. Also, take note of those areas serving more than a single purpose and those that will require more than one type of lighting. Light Bulbs Etc operates a professional design team of ALA certified lighting consultants providing in home lighting design and layout services. Whether you have a single room or a whole house to illuminate whether a remodel, a new house or just simply re-decorating, we are confident that you will find our expertise and ideas an invaluable benefit.

Chandeliers at Light Bulbs Etc

Selecting a chandelier can be an overwhelming task if you aren't informed about a few basic concepts.  If you have ever walked into one of our Orange County or Inland Empire showrooms, you'll notice that we have hundreds of chandeliers on display.  We have chandeliers of all shapes, sizes and finishes.  From contemporary to transitional to traditional, the options are endless.

The first step in choosing a chandelier is to select one that will compliment your home.  A chandelier does not only have to serve as a light source, but it can serve as a centerpiece above your dining room table, in your foyer and even in your bedroom or bathroom.  We have a huge range of chandeliers from manufactures like Kichler, Murray Feiss, Hinkley, Access Lighting, Maxim Lighting, Hubbardton Forge, Fine Art Lamps, Troy Lighting and many more.  Based on the style of your home, we can recommend manufactures who focus more on traditional chandeliers and we can recommend others who focus more on contemporary pieces.  Once the style has been selected, we need to start thinking about the size of the fixture.  Below are some basic principles to keep in mind when determining the appropriate size of the fixture.

Chandeliers Above Tables

Ceiling height and table size are the two most important factors to consider when installing chandeliers over a dining room table. The chandelier should look proportionate to the table and not overwhelm it. A chandelier that is too large may also obstruct the view across the table.

A solid guideline for selecting an appropriate size chandelier for a dining room is to select a fixture that has a diameter that is somewhere between half and three quarters the diameter (or width) of the tabletop. If the dining room table were a rectangle of 50” wide x 72” long, a chandelier that is 25” to 37.5” in diameter would be an appropriate size to compliment the table without overwhelming it. If you have a very long and narrow dining room table, you should select a fixture that is on the higher end of the range to ensure that fixture looks in proportion to the table.

The height of a chandelier should be determined by the ceiling height of the room. A good rule of thumb is to allow 2 ½” – 3” for each foot of a rooms height. Based on this rule, a room that has an 8’ ceiling can support a chandelier that is approximately 20” to 24” in height. It is important that a chandelier should be no fewer than 30 inches above the top of a table. A good exercise before purchasing a chandelier is to measure the distance from the ceiling to your tabletop. If you take this distance and subtract the minimum space of 30 inches as well as the height of the fixture, you will then be left with the distance that your fixture sits below the ceiling. It is a good idea to leave at least 1-2 feet of space between your fixture and the ceiling in case you need to make some adjustment to the height of the fixture. Keep in mind that the 30 inches above the table is simply a rule of thumb and will vary on a case-by-case basis.

Hallways, Living Rooms and Entry Ways

Chandeliers in a hallway or a large room can make an impressive statement as well as provide ambient lighting for the entire room. A good way to determine the correct size fixture is to add the length and width of the room measured in feet, then convert this number to inches. If your room measures 18' x 22', look for a chandelier with a diameter of 40 inches.

An important factor to keep in mind is that this rule of thumb assumes that you have a ceiling height proportional to the room’s dimensions. Hanging a large chandelier in a room with 8 foot ceiling will not work.

At Light Bulbs Etc, we are here to inform you about all of your chandelier options.  Stop into one of showrooms located in Costa Mesa, CA, Orange, CA or Montclair, CA.  We are the Orange County, Inland Empire and Southern California leaders of all things lighting!
